Sailing into winter: Farewell to the summer seas
Published 17:15 on 19 Nov 2023
The end of October marked the close of the summer sailing season here in Paignton. While sailing continues, our Wednesday and Friday sailing nights will not return until the end of March when the change of clocks marks the return of later sunsets. As the season closes, our members find themselves reflecting on the highs, the challenges, and the camaraderie that defined the past months on the water. The 2023 sailing season was characterized by the whims of the weather, ranging from crisp winds to choppy waves, to being completely becalmed. We saw more Easterlys than in past years. It made for exciting scenes from the shore but became a showstopper for sailing at times.
Yet throughout the seasons, competitive spirits soared as our sailors jockeyed for position in the weekly races. The wind, an unpredictable dance partner, challenged even the most seasoned sailors. Yet, each gust and lull became an opportunity to showcase skill and seamanship. The fickle weather became a true test of strategy, agility and a deep understanding of the wind's nuances to achieve victory.
Beyond the thrill of competition, our seasoned veterans shared tips with our newcomers further strengthening the club's tight-knit community united by a passion for dinghy sailing in the fabulous Tor Bay. We were fortunate to be able to share the experience of sailing in the bay with numerous visiting sailors taking part in the championship and open events we hosted.
The end of the season was marked with a lively social gathering to say thank you to our volunteers and to formally welcome our new members. Our quiz night was well attended, and the competing teams showed the same competitive spirit they do on the water! There is more to come... Over the next few weeks, we will have our Awards Evening, followed by the AGM. The New Year will be seen in with a Twelfth Night Party. Our sailing calendar continues with the start of the Snowman Series, and we look forward to hosting the RS Aero Youth Squad in January.
We hope the weather will be kind to us over the winter months and look forward to the start of next season in eager anticipation.
